Chinese New Year Festival

SYDNEY LUNAR FESTIVAL 

2019 is the year or the Pig and the City of Sydney hosted a wonderful program of Chinese New Year events to celebrate, including events like the Lunar Lanterns trail, Festival Markets, and the largest Dragon Boat races in the southern hemisphere. In 2020 we celebrate the year of the Rat!

2019 Festival Highlights - sample program subject to change

  • Lunar Lanterns - Friday 01 to Sunday 10 February, Circular Quay
    • Beautiful, large scale lanterns representing the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac will illuminate the city from the western boardwalk of the Sydney Opera House along the foreshore at Circular Quay. Follow the trail of the lanterns to find your zodiac sign.
  • The Rocks Lunar Markets - Friday 01 & 08 February and Sunday 03 & 10 February, The Rocks
    • Markets featuring Asian street food, arts and crafts, plus lion dane performances at 1pm and 6pm 
  • Chinatown Lanterns - Friday 01 to Sunday 10 February, China Town
    • Red, gold and pink CHinese lanterns suspended over the centre of Chinatown with live perfomances and lion dances every Friday to Sunday at 6pm
  • Dragon Boat Races - Saturday 09 & Sunday 10 February, Cockle Bay Wharf
    • The largest dragon boat races in the southern hemisphere with over 3,000 paddlers and thousands of spectators watching the 12m long dragon boats battle it out
  • LED Lion Dances - Friday 08 & Saturday 09 February, Circular Quay
    • Illuminating the foreshore at Circular Quay, performers decorated with LED lights will delight with an electrifying dragon dance

CHINESE NEW YEAR CRUISES 

Combine your Lunar New Year festivities with a Sydney Harbour cruise departing daily. Join a morning tea, lunch, high tea or early dinner cruise before heading for the night markets, or follow the Dragon Boat Races with a 7.30pm dinner cruise from Darling Harbour.
