What will I see on a Vivid Sydney cruise?

A Vivid Sydney cruise showcases the full canvas of Vivid Sydney Lights across the harbour, including Circular Quay, The Rocks and Darling Harbour. Enjoy views of the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge and city skyline illuminated in colour, along with light installations along the foreshore.

Do all cruises include the Vivid Sydney Drone Show and Fireworks?

No. Select Vivid Sydney Cruises include either the Drone Show or the Fireworks. These cruises are timed around scheduled performances, while other Vivid Sydney Lights cruises focus on sightseeing and harbour illumination.

What is the Vivid Sydney Drone Show?

The Vivid Sydney Drone Show is a highlight of the festival, featuring up to 1,000 synchronised drones creating animated light displays above Sydney Harbour. It runs on select nights and is best experienced as part of a dedicated Vivid Sydney Lights and Drone Show cruise.

When are the fireworks

Organised by Captain Cook Cruises and the Australian Commercial Marine Group, a fireworks display will dazzle over a special location on Sydney Harbour, at 8:00pm on most Thursday and Friday nights during Vivid Sydney. The fireworks are only visible from the water aboard select official Vivid Light vessels and aboard Captain Cook Cruises you'll have front row seats.

Where do Vivid Sydney cruises depart from?

Captain Cook Cruises operates Vivid Sydney cruises from Darling Harbour and Manly. Your departure location will be confirmed at time of booking.

How long are Vivid Sydney cruises?

Most Vivid Sydney cruises run between 1.5 to 3 hours. Sightseeing cruises are typically shorter, while dining cruises offer a longer, more relaxed experience on the harbour.

What should I wear on a Vivid Sydney cruise?

Smart casual attire is recommended. Dining cruises may suit slightly dressier attire. Evenings on the harbour can be cool, so a jacket is advised.

How early should I arrive before departure?

Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to departure to allow time for check-in and boarding. Late arrivals may miss the cruise as vessels cannot be held.

Are Vivid Sydney cruises suitable for families?

Yes, Vivid Sydney cruises are suitable for families, couples and groups. Sightseeing cruises and early dining cruises are popular with families, while evening dining cruises offer a more premium experience.

Why choose a Vivid Sydney cruise instead of viewing from land?

A Vivid Sydney cruise allows you to see multiple light precincts in one journey while avoiding crowded walkways. Enjoy a more relaxed experience with panoramic harbour views and access to areas difficult to reach on foot.

Do cruises include food and drinks?

Inclusions vary by cruise:

  • Dinner Cruises: Multi-course dining included (sample menus available online)
  • Licensed vessels: Beverages available for purchase (excluding Rocket catamarans)
  • Vivid Lights cruises: Light snacks available for purchase

Always check cruise inclusions before booking.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, Vivid Sydney cruises are in high demand and often sell out. Booking early is recommended to secure your preferred date and time.

What happens if it rains?

Cruises operate in all weather conditions. Vessels offer indoor and covered viewing areas so you can enjoy Vivid Sydney Lights comfortably, rain or shine.

What do I need to board?

Please present your Reservation Record (printed or digital), including boarding passes from your confirmation email. If booked through a third party, present your voucher.

What happens if I miss the cruise?

Cruises cannot be delayed or refunded for missed departures. Please arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Are seats assigned?

  • Vivid Dinner Cruises: Pre-assigned seating
  • Vivid Lights Cruises: Open seating (first-come, first-served)

Are group bookings available?

Yes. Groups are welcome—please wait until all members arrive before boarding.
For groups of 10+ (City departures), the organiser should check in at King St Wharf No.1.

Are cruises accessible?

Accessibility varies by vessel, as final allocation may not be confirmed until the day of departure.

For the most accessible experience, we recommend the Sydney 2000, which offers:

  • Accessible boarding
  • Wheelchair-accessible bathrooms
  • Spacious main deck seating

Accessible Vivid cruise options include selected dinner cruises (5:00pm–7:00pm departures).
