Whale Watching Sydney: Babies & Breaches on the Southern Migration

Wow, what an amazing whale watching season it has been - and many believe the best is happening right now. Spring is here and so are the playful new Humpback calves. Who doesn’t love a baby! As the weather heats up, mums and bubs head south to their summer feeding grounds in Antarctic. For families, nature lovers, and anyone who wants to experience something magical, it’s the ideal season to see these gentle giants up close.

Why Now Is the Perfect Time

During the southern migration, whales swim closer to the coastline, often in calm waters, giving you a greater chance to spot them from onboard a Captain Cook Cruises Whale Watching cruise. Mothers travel slowly with their calves, taking time to rest and play - which means more spectacular surface action for you to enjoy.

Whale Behaviours to Watch For

Every cruise is different, but you may see:

  • Breaching: whales launching most or all of their bodies out of the water, sometimes twisting or spinning mid-air
  • Tail slapping: a splashy way of communicating, repeatedly slapping their tail on the surface
  • Spy hopping: whales lifting their heads out of the water vertically to look around
  • Calf play / social behaviour: young whales learning the tricks of the trade from mum, surfacing, splashing and breaching closeby

Fun Whale Facts

  • Humpback whales can grow to 12-16 metres long - as big as a bus!
  • Their annual migration spans thousands of kilometres - one of the longest journeys in the animal kingdom
  • Each whale has a unique pattern on its tail fluke (like a fingerprint), enabling researchers to identify individuals
  • The gestation period is around 11 months, with calves weighing 1-2 tonnes and 4-5 metres in length at birth - that's a big baby!
  • Adult humpbacks can weigh up to 36 tonnes, and are famous for their complex, haunting songs that can travel vast distances underwater

Where to See Them

Sydney is one of the world’s best whale watching destinations, with cruises departing directly from Circular Quay. Once you’re out past the Harbour’s Heads, keep your eyes peeled - humpbacks aren’t the only stars of the show. You might also spot dolphins, seals, albatross and other seabirds along the way.

If you prefer to stay on land, Sydney’s coastline also offers incredible vantage points. From North Head at Manly, South Head near Watsons Bay, and the dramatic cliffs of Gap Bluff and Bondi’s coastal walk, to further afield lookouts like Barrenjoey Lighthouse at Palm Beach and Cape Solander in Kamay Botany Bay National Park, you’ll find breathtaking spots to watch whales breach and play against the sparkling Pacific backdrop.
