About the Melbourne Cup

The Melbourne Cup is Australia’s most famous annual horse race for thoroughbreds, with prize money up to $8 million. Another $80 million is taken in bets through the TAB alone. Each horse is at least three years of age and stables from around the world nominate their fastest steeds. The Cup is held on the first Tuesday in November and the 2022 race will be 162nd since its inception in 1861. The race starts at 3.00pm at Flemington Racecourse and is 3,200 metres in length. A total of 24 horses line-up for the start, excluding any late scratchings. The Melbourne Cup is a handicap contest in which the weight of the jockey and riding gear is adjusted with ballast to a set weight for all contestants.
