The first Melbourne Cup was held in 1861 and won by "Archer", a horse from Nowra NSW who had walked 800km to get to the race. Archer's owner collected £170 and a gold watch. Today the winner takes home over 3 million dollars and approximately half of the horses are from overseas stables. 

Two race horses have cemented their places in the hearts of the nation. During the Great Depression, "Phar Lap" was so good that racing officials changed the rules to make the race more of a contest, with no effect. In 1930 he won the Melbourne Cup at the record low odds of 8-11 (1.73). In 2005, "Makybe Diva" became the only horse to win three Melbourne Cups, and in consecutive years.

Service: It was a very well organised cruise and it was very friendly and The Melbourne Cup day experience plus Sydney Harbour was perfect for my first time visitors.The staff were courteous and it went smoothly,having a photographer take some nice photos was a bonus.

The MC was great. Serving staff inexperienced the wine we started with was not available for second bottle. Waitress kept trying, too hard, to upsell. Was disappointed that there was no glass of bubbles on arrival and food selection has decreased from past years.
