Goat Island Ferries and Tours

Goat Island is located in Sydney Harbour, west of the Harbour Bridge between McMahons Point and Balmain. 

  • Sydney Harbour National Park Island (park fees apply)
  • A prominent 5 acre island in Sydney Harbour with little vegetation
  • During its past it has been
    • a gunpowder store
    • the source of the sandstone used in some of Sydney's finest buildings
    • the headquarters for the Sydney Water Police who kept an eye out for smugglers and escaped convicts
  • The stone quarried by convict labour was used to create the magazine walls which are so thick, the temperature inside remains steady year round
  • Relics of Goat Island's convict origins can be seen including a seat carved out of stone by Charles Anderson who was sentenced to be tied to the rock for two years
  • Scratchings made in the guardhouse by bored sentries are also in excellent condition

Goat Island Heritage Tour - 1st & 3rd Sunday of the Month

Join your NPWS Discovery guide on a fascinating tour of historic Goat Island. Explore the 1836 Queens powder magazine and the convict quarry, as well as their cramped sleeping quarters. Learn what life as a convict would have been like on the Island, their punishment and food. You will also get an insight into the lives of Solders who watched over them. On your tour you will also visit one of the first water police stations in Sydney.

  • Departs 10.35am from Circular Quay

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • You will walk for approximately 1.5km on formed paths around the island
  • Bring sturdy walking shoes, sunscreen, hat and water
  • Toilets are available but there is no shop on the island
  • If you have pre-purchased your tour, please bring a copy of your booking confirmation or voucher to exchange for a boarding pass
  • On the day of your tour all passengers must collect boarding passes from  Captain Cook Cruises, Circular Quay Wharf No.6 by 10.05am
  • The ferry will depart the Harbour Masters Steps at 10.35am
  • The tour begins at 10.50am on Goat Island
  • The return ferry departs Goat Island at 12.45pm and arrives back at Circular Quay at 1.00pm
  • Tours are non-refundable
  • Transfers to an alternative date within a three month period are available if requested 48 hours prior to the date of the original tour date booked
  • Tours operate regardless of the weather
  • Times and prices are subject to change without notice
  • Maximum 30 passengers per tour
  • Tours subject to minimum numbers
